Anya Taylor-Joy was surprised to find the commonalities between two of her characters, Furiosa of the Mad Max films and Princess Peach of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But find them she did, and it’s no wonder that the actress was so excited to take on the role of Princess Peach.
Taylor-Joy discussed her experience filming Furiosa and then recording the voiceover for Peach with her Mario cast mates Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key for EW’s Around the Table. She was excited to bring Peach to life and have her be an example of what a princess is to kids.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie sees two New York plumbing brothers, Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (Day), sucked through a portal and dropped into a fantasy land where Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom is trying to prevent Bowser (Black) from taking over. Taylor-Joy was determined to make Peach a 3D character with her own agency and the directors were up for it.
Taylor-Joy also stars as a younger version of Charlize Theron’s character from Mad Max: Fury Road. She explained on The Graham Norton Show in November that her first time driving a car was while learning the stunts on the movie.
The actress has taken on two very different roles, but it’s clear that Anya Taylor-Joy managed to find the commonalities between Furiosa and Princess Peach. Her determination to make Peach a 3D character with her own agency has made her an inspiring example for kids. Check back later for the full Around the Table interview with the cast of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is in theaters this weekend.
