Today marks the end of an era in League of Legends esports, as one of the most iconic organizations of all time, CLG, has announced its acquisition by NRG Esports. After building a decade-long legacy in the industry, CLG has left behind an unforgettable legacy with some of the most memorable moments for longtime fans of the scene.
From their first LCS championship back in 2015, their impressive run at the 2016 Mid-Season Invitational, and their recent rise back to popularity, CLG’s League team has gone through so many different peaks and valleys. This year, the team bounced back and became a bonafide contender after spending several seasons at the bottom of the regular season standings.
NRG Esports has been given the opportunity to take over the CLG LCS slot and will be keeping as much of the current League infrastructure as it can, including the main roster, Academy squads, coaches, and analysts. The Madison Square Garden Corporation will also become a major shareholder in NRG Esports, while the team will be switching over the brand from CLG to NRG whenever Riot gives the go-ahead.
It’s a bittersweet moment for LCS fans, as CLG will always have a place in esports history as one of the first organizations to help put the industry on the map. Now, NRG will look to build on this legacy and create its own within the League of Legends esports scene.
