This game combines the strategic elements of chess with the execution of a fighting game. Each traditional chess piece has its own dedicated move set and archetype, so players will need to be familiar with both the board and the fighting game actions.
The emphasis on the position of chess pieces is also key, with assists becoming available if fighters from the same team are next to each other on the board. At the end of a round, the loser’s piece is lost and the winner’s has its health rounded up to the nearest 200 out of 1,000 to stay on the board.
Checkmate Showdown is an indie-developed game that is currently seeking a publisher and planning an eventual Steam release with the hopes of a PlayStation version down the road too.
