Combining two of the most popular genres in gaming, Real-Time Strategy (RTS) and First-Person Shooter (FPS), is no easy task. However, Bohemia Interactive, the developers of Arma 3 and DayZ, are taking on the challenge with their upcoming game Silica.
Set on a distant planet, Silica puts players in the role of a commander and allows them to battle from above or switch to a first-person view to fight on foot or in various vehicles. The game also features giant crabs, which make for a unique and exciting gaming experience.
Silica is the first project to come from Bohemia Incubator, the developer’s indie publishing label. The game is the work of Martin “Dram” Melichárek, the lead developer on Bohemia’s Take On Mars.
This isn’t Bohemia’s first time tackling the RTS/FPS hybrid genre. Back in 2012, they released Carrier Command: Gaea Mission, which had some promise but was limited in scope.
Silica looks to take what Gaea Mission started and add some unique elements of its own. The game will feature multiplayer modes in addition to singleplayer, and the giant crabs certainly make for a unique gaming experience.
The game’s Steam page is live now and it’ll launch into early access soon. Bohemia plan to keep Silica in early access for 9-12 months.
